Wie zijn Wij

Waarom deze website?

Wij zijn Willem en Wendy van Amerongen en we staan op het punt om aan ons leventje een totaal andere invulling te geven en naar het buitenland te gaan als vrijwilliger voor Medair. Deze website is voor familie en vrienden om hen op de hoogte te houden van datgene wat we gaan doen in het buitenland en alle voorbereidingen die daar aan vooraf gaan, maar ook voor iedere andere geinteresseerde. Bedankt voor jullie steun en interesse!

Als je voor langere tijd naar het buitenland wilt, zijn er allerlei dingen die zo’n beslissing tegen kunnen houden. Als je een vaste baan hebt of een huis of huisdieren en zoals voor ons gold… dat we net zo’n beetje alles voor elkaar hadden… We zijn getrouwd in mei 2002, hebben voor die tijd een huis gekocht in Amersfoort, ondertussen alles helemaal opgeknapt, een gemeente gevonden waar we ons thuisvoelen en noem maar op.

Toch beseften we allebei: “Als we echt willen, dan moeten we nu de knoop doorhakken. Later doen we het vast niet meer. En eigenlijk was de knoop bij ons toch niet zo groot…”.

Na onze reis naar Ecuador via World Servants (werkvakantie voor drie weken in augustus 2005) waren we zo enthousiast, dat we er ook niet meer omheen konden. Bovendien ervaarden we Gods zegen in de stappen die we toen zetten. We sponsorden drie kinderen via Compassion in de Dominicaanse Republiek en in India, mede hierdoor raakten we steeds meer betrokken bij mensen in nood en wilden we meer doen dan alleen brieven schrijven en bidden. Vooral tijdens onze werkvakantie ontdekten we steeds meer onze behoefte om iets van onszelf te geven aan hen die het heel wat minder luxe hebben getroffen dan wij. Het was zo confronterend om als “rijke” door Quito te lopen en continue kinderen te zien bedelen, schoenen te zien poetsen, in lompen te zien lopen, noem maar op. Overal zag je ze, allerlei dingen proberend om ook maar iets van “de rijke” te ontvangen of zijn/haar aandacht te trekken. En dan te bedenken dat die kinderen het geld weer moeten afdragen aan een volwassene… Het probleem van die armoede en de kloof tussen arm en rijk lieten ons niet meer los. Ook het gevoel van heel dicht bij God te leven, je leven in Zijn hand te leggen omsloot ons hart.

Toen we terugkwamen uit Ecuador was ons vuurtje dus enorm aangewakkerd. Hoe konden we gewoon doorgaan met de banen die we nu hadden? Uiteindelijk werkten we allebei voor dat ene commerciele doel… en dat terwijl we weten dat er kinderen op straat zwerven en mensen dood gaan van de honger. En dit verlangen in ons hart ontstond toch niet voor niets? We hadden beiden zelfs hetzelfde verlangen… En met dat verlangen willen we wat doen! In Nederland is ook genoeg te doen, dat zeker en gelukkig beseffen vele anderen dat ook. Maar bij ons ligt het verlangen om uit te trekken, daar hulp te verlenen waar de nood zo hoog is dat mensen er zelf niet meer uitkomen. Op dat moment besloten we de mogelijkheden om in een ontwikkelingsland te gaan werken te gaan onderzoeken. We schreven verschillende organisaties aan en uiteindelijk kwamen we terecht bij Medair.

Wat ons aanspreekt bij Medair zijn veel verschillende dingen: het christelijke karakter, het werk dat zich toespitst op noodhulp, de professionele aanpak en de directe hulp aan mensen.

Kort nadat we alle informatie van Medair hadden binnengekregen, kregen we de namen door van Arjan en Maaike, een stel wat sinds kort weer in Amersfoort woont, maar daarvoor een jaar via Medair in Oeganda heeft gewerkt. We belden ze op om een afspraak te maken en te vragen of ze hun ervaringen met ons wilden delen. We konden de volgende dag al terecht. Ons enthousiasme werd alleen nog maar meer aangewakkerd en de week die daarop volgde hebben we onze CV en motivatiebrief opgestuurd aan Medair. Medair was enthousiast en we kregen de uitgebreide inschrijvingsformulieren toegestuurd. Nu zijn we definitief toegelaten tot de ROC training in maart.

We zijn heel benieuwd wat het met ons en onze verwachtingen gaat doen, of dit soort werk een langere periode in ons leven zal beslaan of dat het zich zal beperken tot een jaar… Dat kunnen we nu allemaal nog niet overzien. Wel weten we dat we het liefst vandaag nog horen dat we zullen worden uitgezonden door Medair om ons met alle energie en enthousiasme die in ons is te kunnen gaan inzetten voor anderen.
